Jam – 2009-05-06 – Carroll’s

Wednesday night and as fate would have it, there was only core Deadstein to be had. Not that core Deadstein is a bad thing, it is just nice to share what we have with other like minded individuals. The weather was nice coming in and there was no traffic, but pouring on the way home. It made for a challenging, hydro-planing ride home.

I was the first on there, the Scott, Rich and Kevin. We had no guests and not even a call to Carol. We were by ourselves for better or worse. Early on Scott was pre-occupied with Lisa’s journey into Kentucky and Ohio to pick Matt up from School. Scott was beat from seeing the The Dead shows and Springsteen (just another Deadstein cover band) with all the Patron that entails. Nevertheless, early on he was on and strong. By the Forever Young at the end of the night he was head bobbing as he was playing in his sleep. An impressive feat in and of itself.

We started the night nicely with the Uncle Johns into Playing and we stopped in the middle of the Playing jam, but we had enough and what we had was good. I remember a bad Hard to Handle, tough to get a groove on. Althea that I sang felt very good. Rich sang a good Ramble on Rose until I messed up thinking the song ended prematurely. Though unmotivated we ended the night after a long break of watching classic Deadstein on Rich’s laptop of Kevin’s 35th birthday at the Hardrock playing a fun and well done Across the Universe. Even Scott was back up after for that.

Jam 2009-04-27 – Carroll’s

This was a Monday night jam stuffed in the middle of the The Dead tour. We had the Garden this Saturday (Jason had Hartford last night) and we have 2 Byrne shows tomorrow and Wednesday. A Busy time in the Grateful Dead family but Deadstein still finds its nook.

With the shows in town and lots going on we had more guests than usual. We had Leo of Ludlow, Scott of Bayer, Trebor (Robert and Miranda of Thinkspace, not Drums and then we had Marjorie, Jason’s friend from the day. Lots of people and place and things to discuss. We almost didn’t have the jam, but Scott was cool enough to muster up the energy to play and play he did well.

Until 10:15 or so we didn’t have a Jerry so we had to resort ironically to playing only Jerry songs. The exception to this was playing a Mexicali which was a request by Miranda. I think we did several real nice Garband things before Jason showed up. The Brothers and Sisters,Stop That Train, Dear Prudence opener was overly solid. Throw in a Cats Down Under the Stars , Tore Up and more and you had a very respectable JGB Effort.

Jason arrived fresh off 2 shows in a row and psyched to play after a long day of work. He had the Q-Tron going so we opened with the sultry Fire and played an Estimated. Played a few more in between including a late night Rooster and closing with a Here Comes Sunshine. There wasn’t enough time, so it seemed but it was all the time there was.

Off to the Byrne then back next week for some more Deadstein. For when the The Dead is all packed and gone on; Deadstein remains to hold on to.

The snake from hell I was staring at all night.

Jam 2009-420 – Carroll’s

It’s a Monday night jam following a Thursday night jam with a Dead show and two kayak trips in between these Deadstein nights. Seems like I just been there yet seems like I’ve been gone for so long. This was a night where I was chattering about these adventures to the chagrin of others but I guess I had a lot to say.

It was just the five of us with Jason on lead with his Strat and Rich had a cold.The only guest to show was Scott the Cacophonous harmonica player. We started with a pretty groovie China Rider where we had some good guitar duo-licks during the rider. We were to go into a Mam – Mex, but Jason for some reason went into the Big River took Kevin quite a while to realize. It had to many grooves to feel good. It all sounded good, we played an had fun. I didn’t bring any extra food tonight. Scarlet Fire was big and we are getting better at the Stephen.

Jam 2009-04-16 Ultrasound

It’s always a bit depressing when we have an away game, or jam, and this week was such a week. Carroll’s was either booked or wanted us far away this week so we found Studio 6E of Ultrasound and it’s stairwell as our home for the evening. For the record in case any of us has look up where this place is, it is on 30th street between 7th and 8th. It think it was #251. Lots of music stores in this vicinity. Rich was directionally challenged for the night and had trouble finding the place and I was unsure when walking down the street.

I met Scott in the hallway outside the elevator waiting, there is nothing fun about that. They attendant eventually let us into Studio E and it turned out to be pretty nice. It was roomy and the equipment was pretty good, but amps being bolted to the wall definitly put an damper on the whole thing but every worked out in the end. The PA was flat and solid. There weren’t enough music stands so Rich had to do without and and I had to do with out a boom-stand for my mic. No big deal. I started off playing a Matchless amp, switched to the Bogner for the second set which I liked much better, but it eventually started crackling and I had to abandon it. Too bad, because it sounded pretty good.

We had a rough start of the night with a G jam into Bertha. We needed a song to get comfortable in the environment and I probably will appreciate the fact that Rich didn’t get his recorder setup until after the Bertha opener. Rich would occassionally hit a key on his keyboard and a whole drum and bass section would begin playing through the PA. That was freaky when it happened.

Being in a 4-man configuration led us to play lots of Garband which is fun. We did I’ll Take a Melody, Mississippi Moon, Rhapsody, Sitting Here in Limbo, One Kind Favor, Waiting for a Miracle, Gomorrah and probably a few more. The music was quiet and relaxed and not as much of a scary experience and being away from Carroll’s in a cheap renal studio usually is. We did some fun country-esque type of stuff like the Rosalie McFall and the Race Is On. The Come Together was OK.

Well it is off to Albany to see the Dead and hopefully get out of my house in time to do a little Podiating before the the show on this brilliant day in April. Till next Monday night.

Jam 2009-04-06 Carroll’s

It was a Monday night in Carroll’s for another Baysidestein type of night. We were in the cozy Studio #2 and Chris from Carroll’s was there early to make sure everything was okay. Well at the time standing around the piano everything was okay, if you know what I mean, but as soon as we started to plug-in and chug along, a lot needed fixing. I was having cable issues and played direct all night. Kevin sounded like he blew a speaker, he blew a battery and Bayside Mitch couldn’t get his Martin to play, that was all worked out in the end.

We were a six man band including Bayside Al on guitar and Bayside Russell on drums. We had lots of fun and sounded good through the night. The only guest that I recall was Scott Bayer and he didn’t bring his harmonica this week.

I hope Rich will be able to post the song but I recall playing the following, Feel Like a Stranger, Simple Twist of Fate, Around and Around, Wharf Rat, Looks Like Rain. There was an Eyes of the World where I was playing drums and Russ was playing Mitch’s acoustic. There was Scott’s soulful Box of Rain where he was able to sing while letting Russell play drums alone.

I don’t recall that we played many songs and we took many breaks. I brought in a bottle of wine and I thank Kevin for the cork screw and cups. That helped. For the record it was a jt cellars 2006 petite sirah out of lodi, CA. I hadn’t had a petite sirah since my trip to Napa 15 years ago and I remembered I liked it then and I enjoyed it last night. It was fruity and easy to drink. Bold and purple. If anyone wants to keep up with wine drinking you can follow it on my wine blog at http://lgwine.wordpress.com. In addition, I also brought in my preponderance of the candy and almonds. The almonds are going quickly these days. Maybe a little prune juice, cottage cheese and toast will be good for next jam.

dcc_0890_edited-1 This was a big Tuesday night jam where we had many more guests than usual. That usually puts us on our best behavior and for the most part we played well, though we may not have played too many songs. As far as guests we had Scott Bayer, our current Freakboy, Stu, Ken Levine and like 3 or four other people who I don’t really know. Jason brought along his ’83 tour buddy Craig. It seemed they enjoyed us. By 11:00pm, it was just the four of us as Jason left early with Craig who had to catch an early train home.

As far as the group we had Jason on lead with his Travis and these rest of us were like the Professor and Mary-Ann. Jason had his modded Q-tron and opened with the Feel Like a Stranger and closed with the Estimated Prophet so we made good use of the box. Highlights from my recallection include the Morning Dew, Hurts me Too, Stella Blue. Scott and Jason we on cloud-9 after getting into the Dead show at the Roseland. A very cool experience.
