Jam – 2012-12-04 – Carroll’s

Deadstein Jerry Sketch Look Down

This was a Tuesday night where we played another night with Donna D; joining us for the first set.  Alan on the other hand did not join us for any sets .  In addition, there were no guests in the room to experience our jam.  I was psyched that I printed out Roberta Flack’s Killing Me Softly just before the jam because that was a lot of  fun to play with her.  We never did that before and it was good from second one.  The Who stuff we tried was a bit more challenging.  There was lots of good stuff and I can’t wait to try it all again. Playing with my new subscriptions to Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite and my new Wacom pen/tablet give  me the drive to draw instead of write.

Jam – 2012-11-28 – Carroll’s

Dark Side of Deadstein

It was a standard Wednesday night of Deadstein, with nothing much to be expected but the 6 of us.  Though the Rockefeller Christmas Tree was slated to be lit right about the same time as our arrival, it didn’t seem to impact our plans.  Kevin had appointments in the city earlier and when I arrived I found him sleeping on the floor.  That startled me a bit.  Rich thought we were playing the night before and went to Carroll’s on Tuesday night only to find no one the play with.  When he arrived at this jam, he  was psyched because he has been prepping Donna D. with some good listening music and she was going to be joining us later in the night.

Waking up from his stupor, Kevin wanted to play something mellow and surprising suggested that we play Breathe from Pink Floyd.  We don’t do it often but it is in the supplemental portion of the book so we gave it a go.  It was a lot of fun and got us off to a good start for the night.  We even pulled off the Time pretty well and got back into the Breathe reprise to end this Pink Floyd endeavor.  It was cool and fun while it lasted.  We then headed into out Deadstein music and we were primed to play.

Staring with the slow Floyd gave me a good foundation of tone to work with for the rest of the night and I felt really comfortable within myself and the music; a great place to be.  The band and I were playing well which also helped when Donna D. showed up to sing a the second part of the first set with us.  She had been listening to a lot of Grateful Dead music provided by Rich.  She pleasantly shocked us when she said she wanted to play Comes a Time and that she had been listening to several versions from several eras and thought she had a good handle on it.  Unfortunately she did great but her mic was turned off for the first half of the son; my bad.  After we fixed that, she was good to go.  She kept surprising us by pulling songs out of her ass that were classics Jerry ballads and would be fun to play, such as the Morning Dew, Stella Blue and St. Stephen.  Well maybe the Stephen wouldn’t be too much fun to play since we don’t do it well, but we sure gave it the Deadstein try.  I on the other hand, pulled a Stephen –>  Dancin’ combo out of my ass which proved to be a great choice for Donna D and the rest of us.  She was able to let loose on that one.

Additionally, Donna’s Dew and Stella Blue were really well sung and phrased, and impressive feat while trying to survive the vortex that is Deadstein.  The ending jam of the Dew showed the true weakness of Deadstein in our inability of seeing the big picture of a song.  Not knowing what a song is about, not knowing where you are and playing a Morning Dew without any of the respect it deserves.  It was a travesty to witness the lack of patience of not letting Donna D sing out the final few “guess it doesn’t matter anyway’s” in a serene blossom of tonal petals coated in dew.  This would obviously be followed by the guitar lead/jam that peaks out over a couple of minutes like a Morning Dew is designed.  It was just such a shame, because the rest of the Dew was so good, why fumble the ball with victory in sight?  A little patience, maturity and focus is all we need.  Come on people!  Anyway, short of that, there was a lot of fun to be had with Donna D.

Our guests were for the night Steve and Lindsey as well as the aforementioned Donna D and a less than stellar showing of Scott Bayer.  We ended the Donna D. segment with halftime for some and time for  Rich and I to play a couple of Jerry acoustic type numbers with Donna D.  The Amazing Grace took me half the song to click in with the 3, but once I did, it was really cool.  Too bad about that lost opportunity.  The Swing Low was a lot of fun also.  After that everyone else left and it was back to standard Deadstein.

We were playing well and time was going slowly.  The second set provided a lot of time to play and we continue to play well.  We migrated to songs typically associated with the first set, but it was a nice assortment of songs.  It also felt like a good second set. I guess we will have to give it a listen.  Thanks to Rich for providing the recordings.

Jam – 2012-11-19 – Carroll’s

This week in jamming featured Andy Trister in addition to the usual bunch of freaks that don the instruments of Deadstein.  While he was only there for the first set of the evening, Andy’s set was substantial and a good time for all.We had some really good songs in there like the To Lay Me Down, Jed, Comes a Time and more.

I think our only guest were Meg Ryan and Donna D with Lee graciously giving up the throne for Ryan during the Bertha.  Being the jam prior to Thanksgiving, we were all just thankful we could jam at all so this jam was one to appreciate.

Jam – 2012-11-15 – Carroll’s

20121119-003241.jpg

With a visit to my sister’s home in Austin, TX over the previous week, I had not played any guitar nor thought too much about Deaadstein, Grateful Dead, etc. for the previous week. Though, I didn’t miss a week of Deadstein, it felt like I did and I wasn’t quite ready for the jam. I also had a swollen, jammed left index finger, pardon the pun, but I was hoping the new strings and the power of the jam would get me through the night. Of course it did as I had no other choice.

When I got there, I discovered that Scott was fortunate enough to have scored a ticket to a dream show of his with Warren, Greg Allman and Peter Frampton playing at an exclusive cancer fundraiser. He donned a suit and left us for the second half to get to that show at the Armory. For the second half, Ryan picked up the sticks and sat on Scott’s stool. Additionally, we had Donna D sing a Sing which she referred to as the Muppet song. That was our highlight as that song usually becomes. It’s such a happy song and thought.

For the rest of the night we started with a tribute to Shakedown Street as the album was released on this day sometime in the late 70’s. It was a good muse anyway for the night. Alan was late and missed the Good Lovin and most of Shakedown but joined us from there on.

As far as guests, in addition to the ones previously mentioned, we had Maggie and Steve and several others at the end of the night. They urged us to play and additional song at the end of the night which resulted in the U.S. Blues.

By the second set, I think my weak knees were getting wobbly as my sense of time was diminishing. I was having strange juxtapositions of temporal elements undulating through the music-time continuum. Needless to say, this impacted something and there were real problems with the Gloria, Eyes as other moments. You take it all in, learn from your mistakes and come back next week to enjoy screwing up once again. That’s why you have to go to every show.

Jam – 2012-10-25 – Carroll’s

Thinking it was October 26 that we were jamming on, I thought it was a great opportunity to play the Radio City Show from that night in 1980, 32 years ago.  Alan had the same thought and came into the jam saying that it would be good to jam on the anniversary show from Radio City but it seemed as if we had played most of those songs recently, so it probably wouldn’t work.  I had downloaded the MP3s onto my iPhone to listen to the show on the way in and thought the song selection worked for this week.  I was puzzled but then my stupidity was resolved when I realized today was the 25th and not the 26th.  That  was a dilemma; do we play the right day, wrong songs, or wrong day, right songs?  We chose right songs, wrong day.

As I presumptuously assume we all know, those Radio City show featured an acoustic first set.  That was a little bonus and challenge for us; not that we were going to be acoustic, but it is a bevy of additional songs.  It think it was a pretty good night but the fact that I’m writing this 3 week after the fact, you are gonna have to take a listen for yourself.  Check out the MP3s below.

Jam – 2012-10-18 – Carroll’s

With Kno Juan to join us I was the only guitarist for the night, but in contrast to last week, we for the most part stuck with Grateful Dead as opposed to the Jerry Garcia Band.  With did a nice fill of the peppier songs like Uncle, River and Cumberland.  I threw in the very surprising Sailor Saint to close the first set which had its manic ups and downs as it usually does.  With the beautiful autumn weather I have been taking advantage of kayaking and have been preoccupied in the processing my photos.  I therefore haven’t had time to attend to this posting.

As far as guests, we had Rich’s friend Lauren early in the evening and Ryan, Steve and Lindsey joined us for the rest.  It think that was about it.  Ryan did play a couple of songs with us

Somehow, after the set break we meandered into a Dark Star to start the second set.  We then got our feet back on the ground with the Samson which I recall a great drum ending to.  The Eyes of the Maker was a struggle to contain but we let go a bit thereafter with the Playing –> Shakedown –> Playing.  It didn’t seem it at the time, but we did get through about 22 songs so it was quite prolific..  The hear any of it, go to the links below:
